The Role of Digital Technologies in the Learning Environment

Digital technology is part of a process of constant renewal in human communication, in any context in which it is present.

In education, technology made available merely as an instrument is no guarantee of better teaching quality, because educators need to know how to use it for the benefit of learning.

For digital technology to become a genuine ally in the classroom, strategies for its use must prioritise pedagogical intentionality: start from the learning objective, not from the tool; use digital tools to stimulate thinking, not to replace it; assess the process, not only the final product; experiment, document and adjust.

The challenge, therefore, is not technical but pedagogical. Digital resources reach the school environment without educators having mastered them. What often happens is a constant pursuit of the new, and the teacher — a professional who knows their field, who knows their students, who has years of pedagogical practice — is faced with novelties that promise to transform everything, yet does not know how to use them and loses sight of what truly matters: learning.

Faced with this challenge, the pedagogical perspective is essential to ensure that digital content is reliable, ethical and aligned with learning objectives, turning an excess of information into structured knowledge.

In addition, the innovative role of technology in everyday school life can make all the difference in enabling a recentring of the educational process, which had historically rested on the teacher, towards student agency, making students responsible for the process of their own development and therefore of their own education, without ceasing to attribute to the educator the role of guide in this process.

In redesigning pedagogical practices from this perspective, it becomes clear that innovation is intrinsic to the use of technology in favour of learning, ensuring that the tools employed strengthen student agency and help overcome contemporary educational challenges, preparing students for life and for work in a constantly changing world.

As for digital tools in schools, integrating technologies and active learning methodologies into the curriculum should not be seen merely as technical support, but as a transformation in the way knowledge is built.

In the current landscape, approaches to digital culture, media literacy, digital literacy and AI literacy are important requirements, with the aim of developing students' critical thinking and their sense of responsibility in the appropriate use of digital tools.

Technological resources must also reach every professional working in the school, so that these resources are used to their fullest in support of students' education.

Guidance and support for appropriate use create a safe, ethical and enabling environment in which teachers, students and school leaders make the most of technology as a pedagogical tool, and not as a substitute for critical thinking.

In this context, it is essential to organise the entire structure required to implement an action plan regarding the equipment to be used, internet quality, technical support, system management, access and connectivity, and platforms integrated with the management system.

The expectation, then, is that educational technology will act as an intentional and critical tool to strengthen inquiry-based learning. It should promote twenty-first-century skills — such as critical thinking, collaboration and creativity — support students, and always be used with ethics, responsibility and balance in the digital and artificial intelligence era in which we live today.
